Joseph Perry Free applied for a Homestead Patent on April 30, 1878.
(Section 24, Town 116, Range 45). This was in Freeland township, Lac
qui Parle county, Minnesota. He received his final patent on
October16, 1884. He built a frame house 16 x 20; a frame stable 14 x
16; and a frame granary 14 x 16. He had 95 acres cleared for
cultivation. Joseph was also a blacksmith. Joseph and his family
remained on the farm until the death of his wife in 1893. Shortly
afterwards, he took his family to Virginia, near Simeon where his
