"Alfred Henry Duryee was born near Ceres, McKean County, Pennsylvania, on December 14, 1852. He was the oldest son of Andrew and Mary North Duryee. He died on February 24, 1931, at the home of his son at Webster, South Dakota. At the time of his death Alfred Duryee was seventy-eight years, two months and ten days old.

In 1867 he moved from his native state with his parents to Janesville, Rock County, Wisconsin. Four years later the family changed their residence to Loganville, of Sauk County, Wisconsin. IN 1873, Mr. Duryee moved to McIntire, Iowa. He remained at this place six years.

On the 24th day of November, 1872, he was married to Mary Jane Shupe, of McIntire, Iowa. To this union five children were born, all of whom survive him.

Alfred Duryee came into Dakota Territory and obtained a homestead in 1879. The following spring the family moved into their new home. The new abode was six miles north of where Henry now stands. The Duryee family moved from the Graceland community, Codington County, to Watertown, South Dakota in 1905. In this city the family has since made their home.

He leaves to mourn his death his wife, Mrs. Mary Duryee; one son, W .A. Duryee, of Webster, South Dakota; four daughters, Mrs. J. E. Underwood of Watertown, South Dakota; Mrs. Francis Seeley, of Jefferson City, Missouri; Mrs. Roscoe Lentz, of South Bend, Indiana; and Mrs. R. E. Morris of Bismarck, North Dakota. Nine grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren also survive him."
