Obituary:
Lewis Butler, 82, died Wednesday, June 14, 2006 at his residence. He was born October 2, 1923 in Erie, son of the late Ralph and Gertrude Scott Butler. A lifelong resident of Erie, he was a 1942 graduate of Academy High School. He drove truck for over 40 years, retiring in 1980 from Erie Delivery Co. after 32 years service, and also worked for Abrams Storage & Hauling and Holt Transfer. Mr. Butler was a longtime member of the First Baptist Church, and its successor Crossroads Community Baptist Church, where he served on the Board of Deacons and the Board of Trustees for many years. He was very active in auto racing, working for several race teams on the United States Auto Club Midget, Sprint, and Indy car circuits. He attended the Indianapolis 500 for over 50 years. He was a charter life member of the Winchester Ind. Speedway Old Timers Club, where he served on the Board of Directors, and was a member of the National Old Timers Auto Racing Club, Vintage American Race Cars, North American Midget Auto Racing Series, and Teamsters Local No. 397. Friends may call Friday 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Scott Funeral Home, 2104 Myrtle Street. A service will be held there Saturday at 10 a.m. Pastor David L. White and the Rev. Katie White both of Crossroads Community Baptist Church will co officiate. Private burial will be at Fairview Cemetery.
