In the year 1878 at 68 years of age James immigrated to WA Territory with his wife Jane, son George W. and daughter Nancy. Their son Joseph was already living in the Dayton, Columbia Co. WA area and had made detailed plans by letter on how their journey was to take place. It was a long and perilous journey by train to San Francisco, by ocean steamer up the Pacific to Portland Oregon, then by boat up the Columbia River. He died only two years after making the journey, homesteading land with his wife on Patit Creek near Dayton in Columbia Co. WA Territory and is buried at the local cemetery.
