Went in to the service 2-18-46 Service: Chanute Army Air Base, Rantoul, Ill. Schooling for Radiosonde Operator. This is where a balloon is sent up with radio equipment hooked to it. By using this equipment we were able to tell the wind speed and direction, also the temperature and humidity. Was in instructor in electronics and went to Kearney Air Base, NE. We tracked weather balloons to a height of 30,000 feet. At that time it was the highest ever tracked. June 29, 1949. Source: Ida Barton |
