Early Day "Hello Girl" in Roseburg Succumbs at 91 Mrs. Myrtle L. Peters, 91, Portland resident since 1906 died Monday morning Aug 14, in Canby Nursing Home where she had lived since February 1966. She had been Roseburg's first telephone operator, performing that service prior to her marriage to Edward Proctor Long. She was born Myrtle Gillette, May 30, 1876 in Red Bluff, Calif., and went as a baby to the Pendleton plains where she grew up. Her second husband, Martin L. Peters died in 1938. She was a charter member of the Neighbors of Woodcraft in Portland, an honorary member of the Mt. Hood chapter of the Order of Eastern Star, and a member of Scout Young auxiliary, Spanish American War Veterans. Mrs. Peters was the mother of Mrs. M. H. Callender of Woodburn, grandmother of Mrs. Warren (Sue) Cox of Canbry and Mrs. George (Barbara) Gibson of John Day, and great grandmother of seven. She leaves two stepdaughters, Mrs. Mark West of San Francisco and Mrs. Leslie Beard of Salem. Funeral services wre Wednesday afternoon at Lincoln Memorial Park chapel, the Rev. Mack Leabo of St.Paul's Episcopal church, Oregon City, officiating. |
