69/8/6. Buried Nov. 20, 1940, Lot 296, section West. s/o John W. Chapin. w/Bertha May Lown. Was a prominent farmer on the Fluvanna-Townline Road. Former president of the Fluvanna Library Association and the Fluvanna Cemetery Association. He was assessor of the Town of Ellery. He was a former president of the Chautauqua County Farm Bureau.

Obituary:  The funeral of Jay S. Chapin was held yesterday afternoon from the home in Fluvanna Town Line Road with Rev. Gordon Houser of Jamestown officiating, assisted by Rev. Mr. Beightol of Niobe. Mrs. Lena D. Haskin, Mrs. George Thompson and Mrs. Delbert Johnson sang. Honorary bearers were George Thompson, Frank Stowell, Hoyt Strunk, Fred Strunk, Louis Shaver and Benjamin Pringle. Active bearers were Henry Nelson, Arthur Wahlgren, Alfred Lord, Harry Lord, Samuel Lord and Edmund Lord. Burial was in Fluvanna Cemetery. From away were Frank Chapin, Mr. and Mrs. Albert Smith, James Whipple, Mrs. Edith King, Mr. and Mrs. Clifton Wilkins, Mrs. Dolly Chapin, Mrs. Rulaf Chapin, Mrs. Earl Chapin, Miss Velma Chapin, Mrs. John Barton, Arthur Chapin and Norris Chapin, all of Union City, Pa., Mr. and Mrs. Wayne Hamilton of Bradford, Pa., Mr. and Mrs. Philmore Halvick of Youngsville, Pa., Norris Chapin of Corry, Pa., Jay Holbrook of Olean, Mrs. Edith Warner and daughter, Mary, and Matt Robick of Guys Mills, Pa. The Ellery Town attended in a group.

Cemetery Transcription:  Jay S. Chapin died Nov. 19, 1940 at age 69/8/6. He was buried Nov. 20, 1940 in the Fluvanna Cemetery Lot 296 Section W. He was the son of John W. Chapin. He married Bertha May Lown. Bertha was born in 1875 and died Nov. 4, 1917. She was the daughter of Andrew & Fanny (Rhodes) Lown.
