The 83d Pennsylvania Volunteers hailed from the northwest corner of Pennsylvania.
During the Civil War they lost more men then all but one other Federal Regiment.
By the time they reached Gettysburg in July 1863, the 83rd numbered only 250 men and was commanded by a Captain.. The Company was mustered out of service July 1865 at Washington DC.
It is not known if Herman died during the war as there is no date on his gravestone at the old family burial ground. However he is not found in any census data or documentation after that time.
